Thornbury Town and Locality
Thornbury is a small attractive and
historic Market town in South Gloucestershire,nestling between the
River Severn and the Cotswold escarpment. It is located between
Junctions 14 and 16 of the M5. Thornbury is signposted at these
junctions, and is accessed from the A38. The Town has been both winners
and runners up in Britain in Bloom.
Town Pump
Centre piece of the Town is the
replica pump, which before the days of mains water,
would
have been one of the Town’s supply of water.
Town Crest shows the thorn bush, and
the Stafford knot ( Referring to the Duke of Stafford one time owner of
the castle) atop the helmet.
The moto at the bottom
translates as Jewel
of the Severn Vale.
The Castle
Built in the time of
Henry Vlll, by the Duke of Buckingham. Was once a Royal Castle and now
a Hotel of World wide repute.
The Chantry Community Association
The Chantry is situated at the lower
end of Castle Street, and is the home to many of Thornbury's Clubs and
Associations.
Thornbury Parish church of
St Mary the Virgin
The Town Hall
Once a Police Station and
Magistrate's Court, it is now the home of Thornbury Town Council. A
Tourist Information Service is also available on most week days.
Thornbury Museum
Situated virtually opposite the
Church in Chapel Street. Open most week days
The Garden Shop
An independent Garden Shop that was situated
off the High Street in the past.
